“Potop” is a part of a book trilogy of Polish wars in XVII century: the one with Ukrainian Kozaks, the one with Swedes (Potop – where Kmicic is present as a character) and the next one with Turks. I would say it is another reference to Sienkiewicz’s novels. Ataman is a word used by Ukrainian warriors in XVII century for chief captain. Olgierd’s soldiers call him “ataman” (not sure if it is the same in English version). But of course then when he refers to his opponent he doesn’t say “a witcher”, but “a colonel”.
